Bike

When they were first invented, bikes served a very different purpose than they do today. They came into being in the first half of the 19th century, primarily as a recreational device for the well to do merchants and the nobility. The first recorded bicycle race was held in France during 1868.

While cycling remains a pass time for many in America today, for much of the world a bike is their primary means of transportation. This is because in areas of the world with less developed economies, a bike is simply more practical than a car. They are less expensive to buy, do not require fuel, and can be brought inside most dwellings to prevent theft.

Modern advances in cycling technology have led to truly amazing bikes. There are mountain bikes with free travel suspension that lets riders calmly pedal up curbs and similar obstacles. There are stunt bikes so well balanced that a rider can pedal down a fence while on one wheel. There are racing bikes so lightweight and fast that they are traveling faster than the first cars did. All told, the bicycle has come a long way from its blue blooded origins.
