Bike Shop

Bike shops started out as specialty shops that catered to a very small clientele. In many ways, they haven’t changed much from these humble origins. Most shops are locally owned and many are owner operated to boot. They are popular anywhere biking is, which is to say everywhere these days.

A bike shop derives a portion of its revenue from bike sales, but far more often they are making money by selling parts or servicing bikes. You can get your shocks and brakes adjusted for a nominal fee at a shop, or get that 6 gear rear sprocket upgraded to a 7 or 8 gear one too. If you bend a rim on the trail, they can try to fix it. If they can’t fix it they’ll be happy to sell you a sturdier one that can plant that 10 foot drop without issue the next time you try it.

A bike shop also serves as a community hub for biking destinations such as Moab, Utah. Here travelers come not only for bike maintenance and parts, but for advice on trails that the locals enjoy. Many bike shops also offer demos and rentals. This is an especially big chunk of the business for shops in tourist destinations. A demo can let you try out a bike before you buy one, or let you roll with a bike that’s way out of your price range to purchase.
