Electric Bikes

Electric bikes are most commonly known as mopeds. They use an electric engine for power, rather than a gasoline burning engine. While not all mopeds are electric, most electric bikes are considered mopeds by style and engine class. These bikes have some environmental advantages over their gas burning cousins, but also suffer from some technical drawbacks.

One major advantage of electric bikes is that they cost less to operate. Electric power costs less to produce than gasoline, and in addition to that savings, things like oil and other combustion engine maintenance are no longer an issue. They are also more environmentally friendly than a gas powered bike, depending on the power source used to charge them, they may have a tiny carbon footprint comparatively.

It’s not all sunshine and flowers for electric bikes, they do have some technological hurdles to overcome yet. For instance the range of an electric bike is smaller than a comparably built gas bike. The recharge period for these machines can also be a hindrance in continual use. The bikes are slower than their gas powered counterparts, and cost more for a comparably equipped model. However if you can work with these constraints they make a great ride for the environmentally conscientious traveler.
