Road Bike

The road bike is the type of bicycle used in most touring and racing applications today. It features a light weight, thin frame. The wheels on a road bike are larger in diameter than those on its mountain bike cousin, but smaller in width. They are also inflated to a higher psi to give a more efficient pedal to thrust ratio. Road bikes are tuned to be easy to pedal on even surfaces, but suffer severe setbacks when encountering rough terrain.

Road bikes are built for efficiency first and foremost. They look to have the most efficient positioning of your body, as evidenced by the rams horns look of many handle bars. The horns allow you to adjust your back anywhere from an almost vertical position to one parallel to the ground. The different angles are helpful when pedaling either uphill or over long stretches of level terrain.

For much of the history of biking, a road bike was the only option. They are most closely related to the original design of the bicycle of all the modern biking applications. For many years makers of road bikes even denied the commercial appeal of other types of bicycle, such as the mountain bike or the racing bike, and this led to them losing the possible markets for those applications.
